Two paths, and which one to pick

For most Yakima homeowners planning to stay in the same home into their 70s and beyond, a curbless walk-in shower outperforms a walk-in tub on almost every count: it's safer (no getting in or out of standing water), it's faster (a walk-in tub fills in front of you and drains around you), it's easier to use with a wheelchair or a walker, and it holds resale value in a way a walk-in tub does not.

Walk-in tubs earn their place in a narrow set of situations — a household member who wants a soaking bath and can't manage a step-in tub, medical conditions that specifically benefit from full submersion, or a second bath where a soaking option is genuinely wanted. In those cases they are a good answer.

What an aging-in-place bath actually includes

• Curbless shower entry — no threshold, no lip. Wheelchair and walker accessible.
• Grab bars installed to backing (a screw into drywall is not a grab bar).
• Hand-held shower wand on a slide bar — usable seated or standing.
• Fold-down or built-in shower bench.
• Slip-resistant floor tile (COF ≥ 0.42), including inside the shower.
• Comfort-height toilet.
• ADA-compliant vanity clearances if a wheelchair user needs to roll under.
• Non-glare lighting and rocker light switches at accessible heights.
• Lever door hardware in place of round knobs.

What "grab bar" actually means

A real grab bar is anchored into wood blocking installed inside the wall before drywall closes. If your bathroom is already finished and you want to add bars later, the installer has to find studs — which limits where the bars can go. During a remodel, blocking gets added everywhere you might ever want a bar in the future, so the bar goes where it makes sense, not where a stud is.

Walk-in tubs — when they make sense

If a walk-in tub is the right call for your household, ask about (a) heated seating (you're sitting through the fill and drain, so a heated seat is not a luxury), (b) fast-fill valves and fast-drain kits, and (c) whether the door is inward or outward opening (inward is far more common and less likely to fail its seal). Independent Underwriters Laboratories testing matters — ask for the UL certification number.
