Bathroom tile installation in Yakima, WA.

Floor tile, shower tile, herringbone, mosaic, large-format porcelain — with the waterproofing detailed at the seams and corners where showers actually fail.

Tile is the finish that punishes bad prep

A tile floor is only as flat as the subfloor under it. A shower wall is only as watertight as the membrane behind it. Grout is only as durable as the color-matched, water-repellent grout you specified — not the default premium bag someone grabbed at the supply house. Every tile job we quote starts with the prep, not the pattern.

Tile work we do in bathrooms

  • Full shower wall tile with a bonded waterproofing membrane (Schluter Kerdi, Wedi, or Laticrete Hydro Ban).
  • Floor tile including heated-floor installs.
  • Large-format porcelain (24x48, 32x32, 48x48) — the finish that reads as modern and reduces grout lines.
  • Mosaic sheet tile — for niches, shower floors, and feature walls.
  • Herringbone, stacked bond, running bond, and picture-frame layouts.
  • Marble, travertine and natural stone — sealed and detailed correctly (a wrong sealer stains at first splash).
  • Recessed shower niches — framed and waterproofed as part of the shower, not stuck on after.
  • Curbless shower pans built in mud bed.

What separates a tile job that lasts from one that doesn't

  • Uncoupling membrane under floor tile (Schluter Ditra or equivalent) — prevents cracks from telegraphing through the tile as the subfloor moves.
  • Banded waterproofing at every inside corner, curb, and pan-to-wall transition.
  • Correct thinset for the tile size. Large-format porcelain needs a large-and-heavy-tile mortar, not a lightweight bag grabbed off the shelf.
  • The niche shelf sloped to drain — water pools on a flat shelf and pushes past the sealant every time.
  • Grout color chosen after the tile arrives, not from a swatch that lies against your specific tile in your specific light.

Tile questions, answered straight

What homeowners ask about tile once they learn how much of the job sits underneath it.

Can you tile over existing tile?

It is physically possible and we generally advise against it: doubled tile raises the floor against every door and transition, adds weight, and hides whatever condition made the old floor fail. Demolition is a known, priced step; tiling over a problem just moves the problem down a layer. If there is a case where an overlay genuinely makes sense, we will explain the trade-off plainly at the visit.

Are heated tile floors worth it in Yakima?

Valley winters are cold enough that an electric heating mat under the bathroom floor is the upgrade people thank themselves for every January. It installs under the tile during the remodel for a fraction of what retrofitting later costs, runs on a programmable thermostat, and turns the coldest surface in the house into the warmest. If it is ever going to happen, during tiling is the moment.

What is the deal with large-format tile?

Fewer grout lines, cleaner look, faster maintenance — and stricter demands on the installer. Large-format tile telegraphs every hump in the substrate, so the floor must be flattened first and the tile back-buttered for full support. That prep is exactly the difference between a large-format floor that looks monolithic and one that lips at every edge; it is on our quote by name.

Regrout, or retile?

If the tile is sound and you only dislike the grout, regrouting or color-sealing is a fraction of the cost of new tile and we will tell you so. If tiles are hollow-sounding, cracked, or the floor flexes, the problem is under the tile, and new grout is a cosmetic patch on a structural issue. An honest answer here is quick to give in person — bring us the ugly floor.

How long does a tile floor actually last?

Set on a properly prepared substrate with movement joints where they belong, a tile floor outlives every other flooring in the house — decades is normal. The failures people see, cracked lines and popped tiles, almost always trace to skipped prep rather than to the tile. It is why the invisible line items on a tile quote matter more than the tile you pick.
